Job Summary
The Operations Intern supports the Operations Department in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the power plant. Under the supervision of experienced operators and shift supervisor, the intern assists in monitoring plant equipment, recording operational data, performing routine inspections, and complying with operating procedures, while gaining practical experience in power generation, process control, and plant safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in monitoring the safe and reliable operation of the power plant in accordance with established operating procedures.
- Support the monitoring of Wärtsilä W20V34SG gas engines and associated auxiliary systems to ensure optimum performance.
- Assist with the start-up and shutdown of plant equipment under the supervision of the Operations Shift Engineer or Shift Supervisor.
- Monitor and record operating parameters of major plant equipment, including gas engines, reverse osmosis (RO) plant, gas reduction station, electrical systems, cooling systems, and other auxiliary equipment.
- Conduct routine plant inspections to identify abnormal operating conditions and promptly report any deviations to the Operations Shift Supervisor.
- Assist in responding appropriately to plant emergencies, including fire alarms, gas releases, equipment failures, and other emergency situations, in accordance with the Company's emergency response procedures.
- Support operational decision-making by collecting and reporting plant performance data while adhering to approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping by ensuring plant equipment and work areas are clean, organized, and free from safety hazards.
- Assist in maintaining accurate operational logs, shift reports, equipment checklists, and electronic records in compliance with Company procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Support the implementation of the Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) system and comply with all safety procedures before maintenance activities.
- Ensure continuous monitoring of equipment indicators, control panels, alarms, and instrumentation, and immediately report abnormal readings or equipment malfunctions.
- Participate in shift handover meetings and contribute to effective communication between operating teams.
- Comply with all Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality (HSEQ) requirements, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Participate in operational training, toolbox talks, emergency drills, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Operations Shift Supervisor or Plant Management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Energy Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Recent graduate or student eligible for an internship programme.
Knowledge, Skills and Competencies
- Basic understanding of power plant operations and industrial processes.
- Knowledge of gas engines, generators, pumps, compressors, valves, and auxiliary systems is an added advantage.
- Basic understanding of process instrumentation and control systems (SCADA/DCS) is desirable.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret operating procedures and technical documentation.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
- Demonstrates integrity, accountability, adaptability, and a strong commitment to safety.
