Job Summary:
As Senior Bess Specialist, you will join our Engineering and Construction team! In this role, you will report to Head of Engineering and Construction and will have the opportunity to serve as a key technical reference in the design, specification, and integration of large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) connected to transmission networks. This role spans conceptual through detailed engineering phases and includes technical support across project development, due diligence, and investment evaluations. A key responsibility is the definition and application of technical standards and specifications for BESS integration with PV, wind, and hybrid configurations.
The Senior BESS Specialist will engage with internal teams, consultants, suppliers, and EPC contractors, providing critical input for the engineering and commercial assessment of storage assets. The position demands deep technical expertise in storage technologies, system integration, controls, and regulatory compliance. Key Responsibilities:
You will be responsible for:
Project Development and Implementation:
- Lead the design and sizing of utility-scale BESS solutions (>10 MW), ensuring compliance with technical and operational requirements.
- Define electrical configurations, component specifications (e.g., inverters, transformers, PCS, EMS, BMS), and integration interfaces with renewable generators and grid.
- Ensure proper thermal design, AC/DC integration, and fire suppression systems are considered in plant layout.
- Evaluate hybrid project designs combining BESS with PV and/or wind plants.
- Prepare and review technical documentation and specifications for procurement processes.
- Collaborate with external consultants and internal stakeholders to validate engineering deliverables.
- Ensure engineering documentation meets quality assurance standards and supports traceability and compliance.
- Provide support during construction, commissioning, and operational readiness review.
Technical Due Diligence and Investment Support:
- Conduct technical reviews of BESS projects for greenfield and M&A opportunities.
- Support definition of business models and commercial offers integrating energy storage applications.
- Assist in economic and financial evaluations, including cost structuring, risk assessments, and sensitivity analyses.
- Evaluate compliance with relevant grid codes and regulatory frameworks (e.g., NFPA 855, IEEE 1547, IEC, RED III, Decree 128/2016).
Application and Innovation of Storage Technologies:
- Apply advanced technical knowledge of battery chemistries (e.g., Li-ion, flow batteries) and control systems to optimize project performance.
- Analyze and define use cases: frequency regulation, peak shaving, energy shifting, backup power, and grid support.
- Use simulation tools such as Homer Pro, MATLAB/Simulink, SAM, or PVsyst to model technical and economic performance.
- Support innovation initiatives related to hybrid plant operation and digital asset management.
Qualifications and Skills:
Your profile is a natural match if you have:
- Education: University degree in Electrical, Electronic, or related Engineering fields.
- Experience: 10–12 years of experience in energy sector projects, with a minimum of 6 years in the design and implementation of BESS.
- Skills: Fluent in English (written and spoken).
Advanced knowledge of BESS technologies, EMS/BMS architecture, bidirectional inverters, thermal systems, and grid compliance.
Familiarity with applicable standards and regulations (e.g., NFPA, IEC, IEEE).
Proficiency in software tools: Homer Pro, SAM, MATLAB/Simulink, AutoCAD.
- Technical Competencies:
- Advanced knowledge of BESS technologies, EMS/BMS architecture, bidirectional inverters, thermal systems, and grid compliance.
- Familiarity with applicable standards and regulations (e.g., NFPA, IEC, IEEE).
- Proficiency in software tools: Homer Pro, SAM, MATLAB/Simulink, AutoCAD.
- Travel requirements: This role requires frequent national & international travel. And availability to attend site inspections, technical meetings, and engineering reviews.

- Certifications in EMS, BMS, power electronics, or grid integration are a plus.

- Able to lead technical discussions with international suppliers, clients, and partners.
